Greenway del lago di Como is a 10 km (round trip) naturalistic and cultural route that goes through some of the most characteristic Lake Como’s villages, allowing visitors to discover ancient places of worship, historic villas and unforgettable natural views.
The Greenway walk, which passes through Colonno, Sala Comacina, Tremezzina and Griante, is signaled through appropriate signs and plates placed on the road surface: you will never get lost!
You can choose whether to do the entire route, lasting about 3 and a half hours, or the individual parts. The path moves along the ancient Via Regina, a street that owes its name to the importance it played as a main road, in the past and even today.
How to get to Greenway del lago di Como
The Greenway runs along Lake Como starting from Colonno and arriving in Griante. Here are some suggestions on how to reach Colonno.
Take the A9 motorway (Como-Chiasso) and exit at Lago di Como. Then follow the signs to Menaggio and take the SS340 road. Colonno is located immediately after Argegno; a sign on the road indicates the beginning of the Greenway. The Greenway is only 25 minutes drive from our apartments in Cernobbio!
You can also take a boat and stop in Colonno or, if you want to start your walk after the start, Sala Comacina, Lenno, Tremezzo or Villa Carlotta.
Arrive at the Como San Giovanni station and reach the boat landing near Piazza Cavour, Como, by bus or boat. Alternatively, you can also get to the Varenna station and reach the Greenway walk by boat.
The first trait: from Colonno to Sala Comacina
The Greenway del lago di Como begins at Colonno. Start your walk from via Cappella and continue until you reach the historic town center. Here, passing through the little main square, you can decide whether to go down to the lakeside or to continue along the way.
After crossing the bridge over the Pessetta stream (often dry), you will reach the old Via Regina, where you can admire an amazing view of the town and the bell tower of the Parish Church of San Michele Arcangelo. You will then reach Sala Comacina.
From Sala Comacina to Ossuccio
Continuing along the ancient Via Regina, you will reach the Chapel of San Rocco. Here you can make a detour and see the medieval town center and the small boat landing of Sala Comacina.
Continuing on the Greenway you will come across the fascinating Isola Comacina, the only island of Lake Como.
From Ossuccio to Lenno
The walk continues entering the village of Ossuccio and reaching the Church of Santi Giacomo e Filippo, which was built between the tenth and twelfth centuries. Further along the Greenway you will come across a narrow cobblestone path leading to the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin.
Continuing along Via Andrea Castelli you will cross the whole town. When there’s good weather, we suggest you to take at the public park in Ossuccio and enjoy a magnificent view of Santa Maria Maddalena’s bell tower.
Back to the main street, you pass Villa Leoni, until you reach the charming Villa del Balbiano in Lenno.
From Lenno to Mezzegra
Crossing the bridge you will enter Campo di Lenno, where you will pass in front of Villa Monastero Pax until you reach the Hotel Lavedo. Once past a picnic area, you can choose whether to deviate to the majestic Villa Balbianello or to continue the Greenway until you reach Lido di Lenno.
Continuing along the lakeside you will reach the boat landing of Lenno, where you can make a tour of Lake Como thanks to Navigazione Lago di Como.
From Lenno to Tremezzo
From the Lenno pier, take the walkway over the Pola stream that will take you to the San Giorgio hotel. Continuing along the Greenway walk you will reach the Borgo di Mezzegra. Along this part of the route you will find the churches of San Giuseppe and Sant’Abbondio, and you can enjoy a beautiful panorama of Bellagio.
The Greenway walk around Lake Como proceeds through Bonzanigo until you reach near Palazzo Rosati, an ancient noble dwelling dating back to the seventeenth century.
The final trait: Tremezzo – Griante
Once you have crossed the historic core of Bolvedro, go down until you get to the lake. The last stretch of the Greenway walk, in fact, extends entirely alongside the lakefront of Via Regina.
In this last part you will see a number of historic villas such as Villa “La Quiete” and Villa Meier until you reach the boat landing of Tremezzo, a few steps away from the famous Villa Carlotta and its splendid botanical garden.
After passing the villa, you enter the town of Griante, the final stop of the Greenway del lago di Como. From here, you can take the C10 bus and return to your starting point or reach another destination of your interest!
